As part of research for the FP7-funded ‘Enabling the Flourishing and Evolution of Social Entrepreneurship for Innovative Societies’ (EFESEIIS) project, a case study is being developed around Puur Lokaal, a New Generation Social Entrepreneurs, based in Arnhem, The Netherlands.
Puur Lokaal (Pure Local) aims to make fair and healthy products from the region accessible and affordable to citizens in the city. It wants to re-connect consumers and producers by buying directly from farmers from the region and by making consumers aware of the way the products are produced. In addition, Puur Lokaal wants to enable participation from people with a distance to the job market and reduce food waste. Their first location is situated in Arnhem, consisting of a farm shop and a restaurant who both offer regional and seasonal produce.
Puur Lokaal is an initiative from the landscape association Landwaard and the regional farmers cooperation Oregional. Landwaard was founded in 2007 and since then has operated as an incubator of start-ups in the field of healthy, regional and fair food in South East Netherland. Oregional is one of the start-ups initiated by Landwaard, and started their business in 2010. It is a cooperation of farmers who supply the local produce of their members to different care institutes and horeca businesses in the province of Gelderland. Besides Landwaard and Oregional, Puur Lokaal has many partners, such as a care institution, two housing organizations, a green investor and the NGO Cordaid, who provide advice in the first phase of realization of the social enterprise.
The idea of the direct supply of regional produce to consumers in the city was created by the entrepreneur Gerard Titulaer, who has many experience in initiatives connecting consumers and producers and who is also involved in Landwaard and Oregional. In 2014 the business plan of Puur Lokaal was drafted and finances were attracted. In 2015 a prototype of the farm shop started in the neighbourhood het Dorp in Arnhem. In the same location, in the beginning of 2016, the integrative concept will start with a bigger farm shop, a restaurant and a courtyard. Under the name of Puur Lokaal spin-off activities in Arnhem and new locations are planned to be developed. The juridical form of Puur Lokaal is a cooperation. In the near future, both citizens and farmers can become a member of this cooperation.
