Teater Psykbryt is a Work-Integration Social Enterprise (WISE) in Malmö with the aim to create jobs for long-termed unemployed individuals due to different forms of mental illness using improvised theater. The enterprise was established in the spring of 2013 in the legal form of a cooperative economic association by four persons, three women and one man, all diagnosed with mental disorders.
Accordingly, the enterprise has not just one but four founders. In addition, the enterprise consists of a board where all founders are included through different assignments (e.g. chair, secretary and board member). This point of departure has enabled Teater Psykbryt to be inclusive on all levels of decision-making. Even though the enterprise has four original founders, Teater Psykbryt recently recruited one extra personnel for the theatrical performances. The founders as well as the newly requited actor all met during their time at the Fountain House Foundation in Malmö (Fontänhuset), established in 1984 as a politically and religiously independent organisation. The main objective of the foundation is to offer support to individuals suffering from mental illness through psychosocial interventions. As such, theater in various forms is offered to its members. Given this background, Teater Psykbryt´s founders shared a joint interest in theater through their time at the Fountain House, which hence laid the foundation for Teater Psykbryt to evolve as a self-sustaining social business.
Teater Psykbryt´s business idea is about creating new jobs while at the same time raising awareness about and hence challenge prejudices against mental illness. In terms of revenues, Teater Psykbryt offers theatrical performances against payment. Even though the enterprise offer its services to all sectors of society, public authorities such as the Municipality of Malmö, Region Scania (Region Skåne) and Malmö University nevertheless constitute the main buyers. Other, more peripheral, buyers consist of ABF Malmö (Arbetarnas Bildningsförbund), Sweden’s largest adult liberal education association, different user associations (brukarföreningar) and private companies throughout the country. ABF is furthermore the one offering Teater Psykbryt access to free rehearsal rooms. Moreover, Teater Psykbryt has sold its shows to the local police office in Malmö, the Public Employment Service and the Social Insurance Agency.
When Teater Psykbryt is consulted for its services, the buyer approach the enterprise with an idea. The idea is then transformed into improvisational theatre based on the founders own experiences from the psychiatric care. In addition to improvisational theater, Teater Psykbryt sells educational packages (lectures) to high schools and universities, all to promote a better understanding of mental illness.
